Long Pepper

Long pepper (Piper longum), sometimes called Indian long pepper, is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning.

Long pepper has a taste similar to, but hotter than, that of its close relative Piper nigrum - from which black, green and white pepper are obtained. The word pepper itself is derived from the Tamil/Malayalam word for long pepper, pippali. (The word pepper in green pepper, referring to completely different plants in the Capsicum family, is of the same etymology. That usage began in the 16th century.



Long pepper is mostly used in the cooking of non-vegetarian items like Biryanis, kababs and many others.

Long pepper is widely used to prepare vegetable pickles.

It is widely used in Malaysian and Indonesian cuisines.

Long pepper has been used as a traditional medicine. It has the higher potency to cure many types of diseases. Due to its warm and hot nature, it has the capacity to cure diseases.


Sinus congestion, coughs, and hiccups: Take 1/2 tbs long pepper powder with 1/2 tbs of rock salt and boil in one and half glass of water and cook for 15 mins and then filer and drink .


Cough: Take about 10 gms of each of dried ginger or sonth, holy basil leaves and long pepper. Add 4-6 small cardamoms and grind to yield a fine powder. Take this powder with equal amount of honey relieves cough.


Fever: For fever due to any reason, take root of long pepper and make decoction in water and drink twice a day. This cures fever, removes toxins and improves liver function.


Headache: For headache heat long pepper powder and smell it.


Insomnia or trouble sleeping: Take 1 gm long pepper powder with milk.


Asthma: Take 2 gm long pepper powder with honey.


Enlarged spleen and liver: Take 5 gm root of long pepper and 1 gm long pepper powder. Boil in 200 gm of water filter and drink it.


Rapid heartbeat: Take 25 gm each of root of long pepper (pipara mool)and green cardamom and make a powder. Take 3 gm of this powder daily with ghee gives relief from constipation and rapid heartbeat.


Chronic malaria patients with splenomegaly (enlarged spleen): Give long pepper fruits boiled in milk and water and drink in early morning.



1/4 spoon twice a day diet with milk
